Circus Cannelloni Invades Britain, by Tuula Pere, is the sweet story of a circus family who takes time out of their daily lives to travel for pleasure together while spreading their own kind of cheer. Virtually everywhere this group lands, they brighten someone’s day. Throughout their journey, they make a positive impact on everyone they encounter.

Pere has masterfully created a cast of characters that will pique readers’ interest. The idea of a circus family is foreign to many readers, but it has the perfect amount of appeal to capture readers from the first pages.

Pere’s precious cast of characters is memorable and, in their own special way, relatable. This captivating story would be a great addition for teachers looking for fiction components to include in a unit on Great Britain.

One of the things about Rosita that we empathized with the most is that she is a bit self-conscious about her weight, her body image, and—in particular—the loss of her athleticism that she once held as a tight-rope walker. Anyone who has had a talent yet has seen it deteriorate along with age, poor health, or weight gain can empathize with her plight.

These circus characters are surprisingly compelling while also being comical (as you'd expect from a circus story). These guys are people you'd love to hang out with and learn from.

While the illustrations are generally not our cup of tea, there are some nice illustrations in here. Some of our favorites involve the elephants.

There is no war or violence whatsoever here. The circus comes to town, and even though they are taking a holiday, they step up when needed, and help to bring laughter and joy to those around them.

I liked the refreshing storyline, which was a blend of characters, adventure, and drama. The characters were a chaotic but likable bunch trying to make the most of their short trip to England.

The illustrations beautifully complement the text, adding another layer of charm to the story. The simple yet captivating drawings bring the lively characters and their adventures to life in a way that will draw in younger readers, making the whole read even more engaging.

Given the absence of any intermediary parent characters, we see the Cannelloni’s connect with their grandchildren in ways that highlight the pureness of the relationship between child and grandparent — a theme Pere often includes but does not emphasize. The character dynamics of the book otherwise highlight the power of teamwork and the importance of family more generally.

The antics found in “Circus Cannelloni Invades Britain” are a light, fun treat for young readers; Tuula Pere plays to her strengths to tell a compelling story about family and the power of working together.

Much like the tone of the book, the artwork is much lighter and joyful than that of many of her other books, employing brighter colors and a more playful art style that will make you feel like you’ve been thrust into the middle of an old-timey cartoon.
